Poll: Bra or No Bra?

Here's the thing. I think my daughter ought to corral her mustangs because it's good for them. However, I have a limited man knowledge of these things. I assume that by parking your zeppelins in a hangar, they remain protected from the effects of gravity, wind, and rain. I've always assumed this is good for the longevity of youthful vitality so that one's headlights shine brightly well into one's adulthood.

But what is the practical value of the device?

  1. If she's comfortable without one and she's not causing a scandal or making herself likely to be sexually victimized, it's not really a big deal. If your breasts are small or perky and your nipples don't show, you don't really need a bra for anything. Some women find bras really uncomfortable. I don't think they have anything to do with breast cancer, though.

  2. The practical value is to lift. Simply put, the larger they are, the more they hurt without one. I agree with WSG, if she is comfortable, there is no need.

  3. If she's at a size (I'm assuming) that results in you asking her to put on a bra on a daily basis, I would bet that a bra would be a good thing. If not for the comfort value, than for the fact that boys her age are going to be watching her in her free run state.

  4. wsg;

I think it is the mistaken impression that her hippy older cousins don't wear bras. Not true. They just have smaller, um, mustangs.

Welcome to Death By Children! You hit the nipple on the--I mean the-- . . . I agree.

  5. Problem is it's hard to get a kid to look forward to the day when they might show some signs of age! Even if you could show her a study that confirmed that her bosom will be down to her knees by age 27 if she doesn't wear a bra now - she won't believe it will apply to her.
There's always the modesty issue - the issue of attracting the "wrong kind of attention" angle, or simply making other people uncomfortable. But honestly - I think you need a female to say something to her. Obviously she thinks you're just being an over-protective dad. Sigh-h-h. I'm glad my daughter is 21 and was never as wild as I was!! :)

  6. I have two daughters...25 and 19. The younger one is...um ...better endowed...and far more modest. Both of them went thru a no-bra phase...and now are both card carrying members of Victoria's Secret.

yeah...there is some protection value to the "over the shoulder boulder holder" both to the "ladies" and from young male oogling. HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BREAST CANCER. And really....most of them are uncomfortable....would you like to wear a snug tight fitting cup all day???

But hey Dad...pick your battles. If you force her to wear one...it'll be off within minutes of leaving your presence...and then it becomes about defiance...and not about the bra.

  7. What Katherine said. Yes.

  8. You're a Heroic dad. Has anyone ever taken her to an upscale lingerie shop to like Schwartz's in Highland Park (HEY I'm in the Western Suburbs -- I have no clue what's on the northside). See if a properly fitted bra is more comfortable.

  9. You might consider having the girl taken for a professional fitting. Most women wear the wrong size bra - which contributes to them being very uncomfortable. A properly fitted bra - and one of the style to fit one's particular shapes will make a big difference. Then, you just need to come to a compromise of when a bra is a must and when you can let it slide.

I have to vote bra. There are too many pervs out there that wanna oogle those mustangs. Plus, she will want her mustangs to always stand tall and proud!

Take her to buy some really cute corrals.

  12. Uh, wsg, the lack or not of a bra is not more likely to result in sexual violence. This is a terrible example of victim-blaming!! Teenage boys ogle everything slightly lumpy, whether with a bra or without. There is nothing a girl can do to prevent said ogling. Furthermore, sexual predators are at fault for their own behavior, not young women whose nipples happen to show through their shirts.

Seriously, it's not a battle you need to fight. Let the child wear what she wants to wear.

  13. Dont know if this is what you meant by poll. But here goes. I wear one b/c I like to feel supported. I will always wear one. I think that if they are over a large B, then a bra is a good thing b/c it supports them and there is a ligament?? anyway, there is something like a string that goes from the collar bone to the nipple and that helps to keep them perky. It is hardy yet delicate. Jogging, horseback riding, etc. anything that jostles them up and down will snap that little string and "nipples say hello to the pavement!" Tell her about that see if she wears one then. The boyfriend doesnt think i should wear one-of course- but i am a good sized A (or as he puts it, 'a perfect mouthful')so i guess i could get away with it. But I always wear a bra to support my causes.

  14. Mainly not putting other people's eyes out. If she plays sports strap her in...if you think she needs one then she probably does...
Prepare her for the endless back bra stap thwacking phase that boys seem to go thru at the same time...bloody annoying.

  15. My daughter just turned 12, and she's sprouting. So, I don't really have an opinion on this; I'm just taking it all in because I have a feeling that in 2 years I'm going to be asking the same questions.

  16. DBC, in that case ask the older cousins to talk to her and take her shopping :). I guarantee you the last thing she wants is to go bra shopping with dad; in fact, she's probably mortified by your bringing it up.

jezebella, if you're naive enough to believe there are no steps a girl can take to protect herself from assault or a parent can take to protect their children, I can't help you. I hope you enjoy your idealism, though. In reality, running around in skimpy attire attracts unwanted attention.

  17. For goodness' sake, people. It's just a bra! Showing her some graphic study of boobs that look like tube socks isn't going to make a difference. She will see and do exactly what she wants to - they are her boobs.
And the ogling line - give me a big fat break. Boys would look at paint drying if it had nipples. Heck, they already stare at their teacher's chest and she's 60 years old and wears embroidered sweaters that match the seasons.
I bet if DBC were to be really heroic and handed over a gift card from Victoria's Secret (or some such monument to the Monuments)the Young Hippie would feel more inclined to wear a bra.
Wait... did you say "Hippie?" You've got more problems than just a bra, my friend.

Unreal. We were discussing Victoria's Secret gift cards at supper. I am not kidding.

  19. WSG, in reality, running around in a female body attracts unwanted attention.

This is not idealism, it's fact.

  20. I think we need case-study photos.... I'm not quite sure I grasp the significance of the issue without a visual....

  21. my bad...just read the ORIGINAL post! didn't realize we were talkign about a kid here. Sorry, didn't mean to post in bad-taste. Just trying to be funny when others were getting a bit too serious. No need to visualize or photograph anything here.

I feel like Krusty the Klown: 'eeesch!"

  22. Its up to her. women do not "need" bras. They've only been around a 100 years.
